Change Default Email Client

Sep 13, 2026 | Windows 11

In this video, I am going to take you through changing your default email client… This may also help if opening calendar invites or emails saved as files on your computer open with the wrong program.

We start by right clicking the Start button on the taskbar and select “Settings” from the menu.

Select “Apps” on the left hand side of the window.

Select “Default Apps” from the middle of the window.

Either scroll down the list of apps in the window, or type the email client you wish to use into the “Search Apps” text box.

I will search for Outlook.

Here you see Outlook Classic (which is the traditional version) and Outlook, the new version.

This is a fresh install of Windows 11 and the Office Apps in Aug 2026, there may be some minor changes to what you see here in the future. You may notice, out of the box Microsoft has chosen different versions of Outlook for different filetypes.

To choose the default email client when clicking on a link, scroll down and select “MAIL TO”, then click the “Set Default” button.

You may also want to go through the list and change other types as needed.
